West Virginia Infant/Toddler Professional Development Program for Caregivers (WVIT II): Relationship-Based Care

The success of the first level of the West Virginia Infant/Toddler Professional Development Program (WVIT) prompted the WV Department of Health and Human Resources (WV DHHR), Early Education Division to develop the next level (WVIT II) of professional development for caregivers of infants and toddlers in order to continue to increase the quality of care and education of West Virginia's youngest children across the state.

WVIT II consists of a 45 hour course for caregivers (10 classroom sessions and a practicum) and a six hour course for administrators. Caregivers and administrators enrolled in this program will have successfully completed WVIT I. This professional development program aligns with WV STARS Core Knowledge and Core Competencies for Early Care and Education Professionals.

While WVIT I provided an overview of quality infant/toddler care, WVIT II focuses on the heart of quality care- the relationship of the caregiver with the child, the child's family, and with the colleagues. Through this course, caregivers and administrators have the opportunity to examine the relationships in their infant/toddler programs and learn strategies for assessing and strengthening the quality of their programs with respect to those relationships.

The course provides the knowledge and skills needed to implement relationship-based care and to mentor and coach other infant/toddler professionals in their center.
